IMPORTANT SITES OF MATHURASHRI KRISHNA JANMA STHANThe Birth Place of Lord Krishna. DWARKADHEESH TEMPLEBuilt in 1814, it is the main temple in the town. During the festive days of Holi, Janmashthami and Diwali, it is decorated on a grandiose scale. GAYATRI TAPO BHOOMIGayatri Tapobhumi was established by Pundit Shriram Sharma Acharya (Gurudev). It was the Tapasthali (place of Penance) of Shriram Sharma Acharya. To construct this Tapobhumi, holy soil and water were collected from 2400 different pilgrimages. These were worshipped and used in building the foundation of the building. This land has a Yagyashala (place where sacred fire is performed) which has an Akhand Agni (sacred flame). GITA MANDIRSituated on the city outskirts, the temple carving and painting are a major attraction. It is also known as Birla Mandir MATHURA JAIN CHAURASIMathura Jain Chaurasi Temple is a worship place of Jains. This Jain Temple has the deity of Tirthakankar Ajitnath (second Tirthankara among the 24 Tirthankaras of Jain) and also the feet of Jambu Swami. This temple was later on built by Mathura Samaj. The main shrine of Ajitnath was discovered at Gwalior during some excavation. This was carved in a beautiful white stone. The other shrines in this temple are that of Parasnath, Neminath and Mahavir Bhagwan. There are also statues of first Kevali (a Tirthankara who preaches Jain doctrine and establishes Jaina order), Bhaubali Swami and the last Kevali Jambu Swami facing each other. GOVT. MESEUMLocated at Dampier Park, it has one of the finest collection of archaeological interest. Rare items from the Gupta and Kushan period (400 B.C.-1200A.D.) are on display. Major attraction for tourists. KANS QILAKans Qila is one of the historical monuments of Mathura. This is located on the northern bank of river Yamuna. The fort is now in a dilapidated condition due to improper maintenance. This is near Saraswati Sangam Ghat. Kans Qila is also called as Old Fort or Purana Qila. VISHRAM GHATThe sacred spot where Lord Krishna is believed to have rested after slaying the tyrant Kansa. BHUTESHWAR MAHADEV TEMPLEBhuteshwar Mahadev Temple is one of the Shaivite Temples of Mathura. The presiding deity here is Lord Shiva who is also known as Bhuteshwar Mahadev. This temple faces to the east and comprises of a Shiva Linga which is believed to protect the western part of Mathura. Besides this temple, there is also a temple devoted to Patalesvari Devi, wife of Lord Bhuteshwar. You must use a flashlight to see the deity in this temple. Other important mahadev temples are rangeshwar mahadev and galteshwar mahadev. |
